The Brazilian Performing Arts and Scenography need your help!
Our goal is to put Espaço Cenografico’s back into action and keep offering the public the best of Scenography free of cost COURSES, SEMINARS, EXHIBITIONS, RESEARCH AND EXPERIMENTATION. Espaco Cenografico is almost closing down its non profit operations, which mean so much to the Brazilian cultural heritage. We cannot allow this to happen, that is why we count on your solidarity in contributing with this cause. In exchange to that, we have prepared very special rewards!
This institution has been stirring up Sao Paulo’s downtown cultural scene for more than 18 years. Located at Republica and easy to access, Espaco Cenografico is a research and experimentation laboratory for scenography, theater architecture and other affiliate areas. In the past 18 years, it has offered countless courses, has created a performing arts oriented library with about 4,000 titles, a permanent scenography exhibition, the publication of EC News – a scenography newsletter, innumerous seminars and workshops, in addition to having a collection of dozens of models and project studies for productions, exhibitions, signed by JC Serroni. The objective is to keep this institution, which has become a meeting point and reference in this segment, open to the general public.
WHAT IS AT STAKE
For the past eight years, Espaco Cenografico has not received any financial funding or grants, either by the public or the private sectors for its maintenance. Its creator, scenographer JC Serroni has been keeping some of the cost free activities open to the public and has been paying for all the expenses of this NGO with his own resources, originated from his own professional activities, through his scenography and theater architecture company, JC Serroni Criacoes Visuais LTD. In the past few years, JC Serroni has taken up a job to coordinate three departments (scenography, costume design and stage techniques), in addition to teaching them at SP Escola de Teatro, so he could continue with his educational mission to fill the gap of the discontinued Espaço Cenografico’s courses. Due to the lack of grants, JC Serroni was forced to rethink the future of this organization. He was no longer able to pay bills and to keep it in shape, running the risk of having to completely shut down its activities, in the imminence of being evicted, and to give up on its property, returning it back to its landlord.
REACHING OUR GOAL
Espaço Cenografico should be able to pay its rental, bills (employees, accountant, telephone, water, light, office material, maintenance, etc), renovations and work restoration on its collection of models and costumes, thus resuming its regular activities.
After the insistence of those who worked at Espaço and who have followed up his trajectory, he gathered up his strength with his last hopes and decided to launch a Crowdfunding campaign for Espaço, in order to fight for putting it back into the hall of the few institutions that offer to improve the culture in our country.
This is a Crowdfunding campaign that has been launched through a Brazilian specialized crowdfunding website called Kickante. Unfortunately, it does not hold a complete English version, and an international tool for donations. We have translated most of its content into English, so our international friends could access it through here and find out more about this initiative. We have also created a Paypal account, should you feel like donating. Please, click on the link below to see how we are doing in Brazil www.kickante.com.br/ecsp
